Just the word Eid brings a smile to the face of any Muslim during the long month of Ramadan.
Many of us have already started decorating our houses, ordering our Eid outfits and are already waiting for that all important text messages about the arrival of this special day. However, putting on our best clothes and celebrating are not the only things we should do on this special day. In today’s reminder we will look at some of the Sunnah acts to be performed on the day of Eid.
The Night of Eid
This night has been named in a Hadith as the Night of Reward (Lailatul Jaaizah). It is desirable to perform nafl prayers on this night.
Rasulullah Sallallaahu Alayhi Wa Sallam has stated:
“Whoever stands up (in worship) in the nights preceding the two Eids expecting reward from his Sustainer, his heart will not die when the other hearts will die.” (Ibn Majah)
Sunnah actions to perform on the day of Eid:
1 – It is mustahabb to recite takbeer during the night of Eid from sunset on the last day of Ramadaan until the imam comes to lead the prayer. The format of the takbeer is as follows:
Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, laa ilaaha ill-Allaah, Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, wa Lillaahi’l-hamd (Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is Most Great, there is no god except Allaah, Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is Most Great, and all praise be to Allaah).
Or you can say Allaahu akbar three times, so you say:
Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, laa ilaaha ill-Allaah, Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, wa Lillaahi’l-hamd (Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is Most Great, there is no god except Allaah, Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is Most Great , Allaah is Most Great, and all praise be to Allaah).
Both are permissible.
2 – You should eat an odd number of dates before leaving for the Eid prayer.
3 – You should wear your best clothes.
4 – Doing ghusl for Eid prayer is mustahabb (recommended).
5 – The Eid prayer. Take the female members along as well.
6 – One of the rulings on Eid prayer is that according to many scholars, if a person comes to the Eid prayer-place before the imam comes, he should sit down and not pray two rak’ahs, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) prayed Eid with two rak’ahs, and he did not offer any prayer before or after it.
7) No Azaan/Iqamah: No Azaan or Iqamah to be recited for the Eid Prayer.
[Muslim]
8) Recreation: It is permitted to listen to songs (without music) on Eid day especially for children.
[Bukhari and Muslim]
9) To pay the Fitrānah amount before attending the Eid congregation. The Sunnah method is of paying the amount before the prayer. However, if an individual has not paid before the prayer, he is allowed to do so after the prayer.
10) No Prayer before or after Eid: “The Prophet (صلى الله عليه و سلم) prayed two Raka’ahs for the Eid prayer and did not pray before it or after it.” [Bukhari]
