Bad words, cussing, profanity, insults, obscenities …… $@&?!!

The regular use of foul language has unfortunately become a very habitual practice in the life of an average Muslim, more so our youth of today.

Whether at home, school, in a work place or cyberspace, the utterance of filthy words has gradually and comfortably made its way into our speech and everyday conversation. What’s even worse, many of us have actually normalized the use of profanity with absolutely no qualms about it nor regret.

Using this kind of language is unacceptable in Islam and contrary to how a believer should conduct himself/herself in any given time.

So what does Islam exactly say about using foul language? You’ll be surprised…..it says a lot!

Upon first preaching Islam to his own tribe, the Prophet (ﷺ) was taunted, ridiculed, insulted, shunned, spit at and physically tormented. But despite all this, never once did he respond by insults or the use of profanity.

The Prophet (ﷺ)’s own servant, Anas bin Malik (RA) testified to his conduct saying:

“The Prophet (ﷺ) was not one who would abuse (others) or say obscene words, or curse (others)…” (Bukhaari)

In fact, the Prophet (ﷺ) himself taught us the true essence of a believer.

“The believer is not a slanderer, one who curses a great deal, one who indulges in obscenity or who in engages in foul talk.” (Tirmidhi– saheeh by al-Albaani)

“But they’re only words” – one might say. Yes true, but these words transcend what we may perceive us harmless.

In the Quran, Allah reminds us: “Not a word does he (or she) utter but there is a watcher by him ready (to record it)’ (Surah Qaaf:18).

It’s no joke. We will be taken to account for every word we say.

The vivid descriptions below is enough to get us to think twice before spewing out foul language ever again:

 Inmates of Hell

“Truly a man utters words to which he attaches no importance, and by them he falls into the Fire of Jahannam…..” (Bukhaari)

“The inmates of Hell are of five types….” And among them he mentioned “…the miser, the liar and those who are in the habit of abusing people and using obscene and foul language.” (Muslim)

The the Prophet (ﷺ) onced advised Mu’aadh (RA) and said: “Restrain this,” i.e., your tongue. When Mu’aadh (RA) asked the Prophet if we will be called to account for what we say? He (ﷺ) replied “Will people be thrown in Hell on their faces or their noses for anything other than the harvest of their tongues?” (al-Tirmidhi– Saheeh by al-Albaani)

 Worst People in Allah’s sight

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“O ‘Aaishah! Have you ever seen me speaking a bad and dirty language? (Remember that) the worst people in Allah’s sight on the Day of Resurrection will be those whom the people desert or leave in order to save themselves from their evil (deeds).” (Bukhaari)

 Among the Wrongdoers

“…..nor defame one another, nor insult one another by nicknames. How bad is it, to insult one’s brother after having Faith. And whosoever does not repent, then such are indeed Zaalimoon (wrong-doers). (Surah Hujaraat:11)

Lacking qualities of a True believer

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“Whoever believes in God the Last Day must speak good or keep silent.” (Bukhaari)

It suffices that Allah hates for us as Muslims to engage in foul language and that the Prophet (ﷺ) warned us against being from those who utter filthy words and obscenities. Not only should we completely avoid using profanity and cussing, but we should also remove ourselves from the company of those who constantly speak such bad language, because the more you hear it, the more you get accustomed to it and eventually desensitized to its vile nature.

May Allah make us from those who only speak words of purity and avoid filthy language.
