Are you Patient?

🔷🔶 Types of Patience 🔷🔶

Many believe that being patient is connected only with times of hardships and affliction, however, the idea of patience covers a more broad spectrum that in fact includes both the good and the bad.

“And for your Lord, be patient.” (74:7) (Do not give up on your Lord)

Sabr صبر entails patience (continuity, not giving up, and consistently overcoming obstacles and challenges) in/with:

  1. Acts of Worship

🔹“Worship Him and be extra patient in His worship” (19:65)

  1. Seeking Knowledge

🔸“With me you would never be able to have patience (18:67, 72, 75)

(* The Story of Musa (AS) and Khidr gives us a great lesson on being patient when seeking knowledge and not rushing through facts*)

  1. Prayer

🔹“And command your family to pray and be patient with it (the prayer)” (20:132). Be patient in your prayer, don’t rush it, don’t weaken, it takes a lot of practice to develop this.

  1. Good Company

🔸“Don’t lose your patience with those who remind you of your Lord in the day and night (18:28). Listen and be patient with them. Don’t sever ties with them.

  1. When People Treat you Well

🔹Being patient means not letting your nafs take advantage of them. Arabic Proverb: If your friend is made out of honey, don’t lick him all

  1. When People Treat you with Disrespect

🔸Be patient, not for them, but Allah, their Creator. Forgive.

  1. Be Patient with Yourself

🔹Give everything its time, do not rush yourself through your life, with wisdom and patience go through things deeply, comprehend, understand. e.g. crushing your 4 years of study into 3 years — a long term it will never be constructive for your overall learning

  1. When Inviting to Allah

🔸Not everyone will appreciate your attempt to care or understand your concern for them, be patient with them

  1. The Divine Will of Allah***

🔹“Be patient with the wisdom/judgement/divine will of your Lord; you are [always] under Our eye (view/within sight)” (52:48)

✔️Persistence, patience and dedication lead to hard work, but Allah is teaching us here the highest form of patience and persistence is not giving up on Allah and not giving up for Allah. Some people go to great lengths, determined to improve their health; they will wake up in the morning at 6 AM to go for a run, read article after article about which foods to eat and which foods not to eat, etc. This is not a bad thing, but do we view our relationship with our Lord as this important? Are we willing to work hard for it and not give up? What are you investing in? What are you working hard for?
